Reading Overview:

By the end of fifth grade students should be able to:

  • Use grade appropriate vocabulary

  • Apply comprehension strategies to a variety of literary genres

  • Write and punctuate appropriately in research and composition assignments

  • Speak and listen with grade appropriate skills

Why read 20 minutes each night?

  • It is the single most important skill to increase success at school.

  •

  • It establishes an expectation and habit of doing school work each night.

  •

  • Students who read independently become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not (Krashen 1993; Cunningham and Stanovich 1991; Stanovich and Cunningham 1993).

Fifth grade students study American history from Ancient times through the Revolutionary War and building our nation.

We also practice Geography skills, writing, speaking and listening strategies, and study/test-taking skills.
